Implementation of a hybrid cloud for Novolipetsk Steel

Over the past 16 years, the NLMK Group grew by acquiring and creating new assets, which led to the presence of autonomous IT services at practically all of the group’s enterprises. The heterogeneous IT environment and the lack of centralization and unification in the IT infrastructure could lead to the inefficient use of resources.

For this reason, NLMK’s top management decided to develop an efficient model to provide IT services to the geographically-distributed company, allowing it to optimize the cost of IT infrastructure management while maintaining the current quality of services and overall IT budget.

Description of the project

The project’s top priority task was to preserve investments in infrastructure that the client had already made. Asteros successfully completed a pilot project within the framework of the Microsoft Hyper-V Cloud Accelerate program to evaluate Microsoft technologies and products as part of the implementation of a data center. The provision of IT services according to the Infrastructure-as-a-Service principle and the possibility to use them within NLMK’s corporate computer network were also evaluated.

To allow for a smoother systems integration, the professionals from Asteros Consulting developed and implemented the single-vendor infrastructure concept based on Microsoft software solutions. Professionals from Microsoft Consulting Services, Asteros Consulting, and NLMK-IT (NLMK’s insourcing company) integrated a total of 13 systems, including unified communications systems, technical support systems, monitoring systems, and access management systems into the new private cloud.

Infrastructure management was carried out using Microsoft System Center 2012 R2. It was used to centralize the functions of the holding company’s service units, to update NLMK’s operating model, to unify standard processes, to streamline the number of IT systems in use, and to eliminate redundancy in software and support processes. Centralization of the client’s infrastructure has made it possible to consolidate a large quantity of heterogeneous information systems with overlapping functions and reduce their number by 35%.

The single user technical support system, which is based on Microsoft System Center Service Manager 2012 and Orchestrator, complies with ITIL methodology and makes use of Asteros Consulting’s own solutions to integrate with unified communications systems.

NLMK’s private cloud provides access to all corporate applications from anywhere within the geographically-distributed company, ensures consolidation and flexibility of resources, and, if necessary, ensures the availability of public cloud services such as Office 365, OneDrive for Business, Exchange Online, and others.

Project results

The project resulted in a significant reduction in the demand for IT support at NLMK’s subsidiaries. The single centralized Service Desk for the entire NLMK Group helps distribute the costs of support and basic infrastructure expansion between users according to their business values. The quality of IT services has considerably improved while their cost of production has fallen:

  • Risk of corporate applications experiencing downtime was 80% lower
  • Time required to install a new server was reduced from one day to 15–25 minutes on average
  • Utilization of server capacity increased by 70% due to systems consolidation and the implementation of automated management tools
  • Personnel procedures and the creation of employee user accounts and their management within the NLMK Group’s various information systems have been automated

The project won the Management, Virtualization and Server Platform Partner of the Year at the 2014 Microsoft Partner Awards, an international competition of the best IT solutions among Microsoft’s Russian partners.
